Engineer Melanie and identical twin and graphic designer Peta have faced many vertical challenges in their lives.

Switching on a light was one of these problems.

At little more than one metre tall, too short to reach most light switches, the women in a humorous Kickstarter campaign said they became "tired of living in the dark after sundown".

"A visit to a friend's home and seeing small children faced with similar challenges [we] realised the repercussions of short reach and high light switches, extended far beyond [our] own experience and many people - disabled and young - could benefit from a cheap and effective solution," they said.

They wanted to raise $3000 as part of their first step toward commercialising their "light switch adaptor".

Melanie, who cycled most places and was a member of the Australian National University Mountaineering Club, said she loved Canberra while Peta, a Tamworth resident, planned to move to the national capital.

Peta studied graphic design at the University of Canberra before working in England for five years and moving back to Australia.

Melanie, a public servant, said she had already created her own outdoor adventure equipment, including a kayak and paddles.

With the Kickstarter campaign for the light switch adaptor, the women wanted to find out if there was a strong enough market for the contraptions to be rolled out on a large scale.

"The internet has really opened up marketplaces for disparate and marginalised markets - it can create buying power," Peta said.
