In Montreal, they created 21 Balançoires, a series of melody-generating swings. In Arizona there was Musical Shadows, pavements that reacted to shadows, and on the Gold Coast there was a giant outdoor karaoke set-up.
Now, for one spring day, Canberra is getting an entire field of balloons.
City Hill, aka that random park attached to the mega-roundabout on Northbourne Avenue, will be transformed into The Museum of Possibilities.
This interactive installation will allow Canberrans to write on paper arrows the things they'd like to see happen in Civic, as well as the people they'd most like to meet there. Using stickers, other members of the community will be able to vote on their favourite ideas.
It's like your last well-meaning Facebook status, except more people might read it this time.
"There will be a field of 450 balloons, and people will be invited to walk inside the field and attach their contributions," 'Daily tous les jours' artist Anne Ouellette said.
"We hope that through this artwork we will be able to empower Canberra citizens and create an emotional identity and ritual."
'Daily tous les jours' are known for their large-scale interactive installations, in which passers-by are encouraged to help shape the art environment. They have a history of taking relatively unused public spaces and "the brain of the citizen" to completely transform the area.
Ouellette will begin assembling the display at 5am Thursday, November 22, but you can check it out from 8am.
The day-long program will include a speech from Ouellette and performances by House of Strangers, Aranda Primary Choir and The Shadies (the Department of Environment and Energy's ukulele club). The Pop Inn wine bar and Nellie's Travelling Café will also be there for food and drink.
The Museum of Possibilities is open between 8am and 7pm on Thursday November 22. For the full program visit designcanberrafestival.com.au. Free.
