Oh, and the bridesmaids are in puffer jackets. It's about 12 degrees. Maybe colder.

Celebrants and wedding coordinators said Canberra couples were no longer deterred by cool weather when planning their big day. So-called off-season weddings were increasing in popularity, they agreed.

"If you can find a venue that’s got big open windows and an open fire, a lot of brides love getting the faux fur out," Canberra celebrant Julie Rattenbury said.

"It’s something a little bit different."

Campbell couple Celeste Searle and John Binos married at the National Arboretum on June 16. The ceremony was held in the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion and the photos taken outside, where it was "very, very, very cold", according to Ms Searle.

"It's not a great way to do it but my father has cancer," Ms Searle said.

"I planned the whole wedding in about 40 days - we thought 'let's quickly get this done'."

Although a winter wedding wasn't the couple's original plan, Ms Searle said it was an amazing day, with guests labelling it the best wedding they'd attended in years. The reception was held at the Hellenic Club in Woden where there was plenty of Greek dancing.

"I think having a winter wedding turned out really well and I wouldn't deter anyone from doing it," Ms Searle said.

The Arboretum has noticed an increase in weddings this winter and has partially attributed the increase to the success of the "yes" vote.

"We are seeing lots of same sex couples come through and the lead time for these bookings is also a lot shorter than average," a staff member said.

"I do think winter weddings are becoming increasingly popular.

"With off-peak dates we’re able to offer some discounts at the Arboretum which appeals to a lot of our couples and another great aspect is often you don’t have the same expectations for the weather during winter, so it’s nice not having that extra thing to worry about."

James Souter, owner, director and wedding coordinator at The Boat House in Barton, agreed "shoulder season" weddings were becoming "quite popular". The venue has three weddings booked each in June, July and August.

"There's pros and cons to every season," Mr Souter said.

"[Winter] allows us a bit more flexibility. We're not so strict on start times."

Flexibility was also the appeal for many couples booking Pialligo Estate through winter, director Rowan Brennan said. But he said there were many other reasons to hold a wedding in the colder months - including that it was "so much more romantic".

“The truth of the matter is that when you get married in what we call ‘the season’ you can get 35 degree days," Mr Brennan said.

"Let me tell you, especially in the farm-style stuff where you want the open air and all the gorgeous things that come with that, if you’re in a suit and makeup to the nines and all the rest of it, it’s pretty bloody hot.

"I feel sorry for some of the guys because they must be terribly uncomfortable."

After getting engaged in January, Hawker couple Tom and Tess Percival decided they wanted to marry before the end of the year.

"After looking at availability and prices, we found we could get what we wanted more easily in June when vendors were less booked out and more open to negotiating a better price," Mr and Mrs McPercy, currently on their honeymoon across Thailand, Italy and Croatia, said via email.

"We felt like winter in Canberra is beautiful and preferred to be a bit cool with all the wedding clothes to wear."

They decided to book the Glasshouse at Pialligo Estate, which allowed for indoor areas and heating. Coats were introduced into the bridal party outfits to combat the cold, portable heaters were set up outside, guests were served mulled wine and throws were handed out as wedding favours.

The pair decided to host everyone inside to prevent the ceremony being affected by rain. The decision paid off.

"The afternoon itself was gorgeous, sunny and clear skies but the day before and morning was very cold and raining," they said.

"The Glasshouse at Pialligo Estate was still amazing for both ceremony and reception and it was really the most perfect day, no regrets at all."

Celebrant Judy Aulich said she "loved" winter weddings - as did photographers.

“To be honest, you get wonderful photos on a cold, overcast day," she said.

"Photographers hope that it’s not sunny, the bride hopes that it’s sunny, but they always hope for something overcast because you don’t get that mottled sun on people’s faces.

“But some people do marry at this time simply because they love winter weddings."

Royal Canberra Golf Club wedding coordinator Carey Lander said the venue had one wedding booked for August and was chatting with more prospective clients. She chose to get married in a Canberra winter herself. It rained - a good omen, according to the superstitious.

"We're still married 23 years later," she laughed.
