The property restrained in 2017-18 includes more than $194,000 in cash, 26 cars worth about $511,000 and 13 houses with a net value of nearly $6.7 million.

That is compared to the previous financial year, which saw the DPP restrain about $1.8m worth of property.

Also in 2017-2018, $1.1 million worth of tainted interests in property was forfeited to the territory, including $624,000 cash, nine cars to the tune of $177,000 and interests in two houses valued at about $228,600.

The ACT director of public prosecutions Jon White SC said an increase in resources for both the AFP and the DPP had allowed prosecutors to take on more complex and larger scale confiscation proceedings.

The DPP now has a team of three prosecutors and support staff dedicated to the work.

In one example cited in the report, the DPP had nearly $389,000 of an accused drug dealer's cash forfeited to the territory even though a judge found the man not guilty of the charge of money laundering.

Canberra's top prosecutor, who retires at the end of the year, used his final annual report to reflect on the achievements and challenges of his 10 years as director.

Mr White said he arrived at the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions office in 2008 to find a moribund organisation suffering from low morale.

He said everything had to be rebuilt, from staff policies to petty cash procedures and records management.

"The litigation record of the office was poor, as exemplified by the fact that no conviction had been obtained in a murder case for more than a decade," he said.

He said the office was now one of which the community could be proud, and that it had earned the respect of the courts and the legal profession.

Mr White cited strengthening the independence of the DPP as the greatest achievement of the last 10 years.

He said where the DPP was once almost subservient to the government justice and community safety directorate there was now a more robust and appropriate relationship with the directorate.

Mr White warned that the final achievement not yet met was that of fiscal independence.

He pointed to fiscal independence as well as two other matters his successor would have to grapple with; allowing paralegals to appear in lower court list work, and the move to fully electronic briefs of evidence.

The annual report also reveals a record number of appeals to the Court of Appeal in 2017-18. There were 50 appeals to the Court of Appeal last financial year, up from 41 on the year before.

The figures represent a 25 per cent increase on average for the last five years.

The report says the increase reflects the greater number of matters being dealt with in the supreme court, which flows to more appeals.

Children's Court matters are also on the rise, with 255 matters finalised in the 2017-18 year, representing a 36 per cent increase on the year before.

Just under half of all trials in the ACT Supreme Court last year were for sexual offences, according to the report.
