A Canberra jail inmate was hospitalised with 36 individual injuries, including a collapsed lung and fractured ribs and facial bones, after a savage prison bashing last year.

His brother, who was also beaten during the incident, required stitches to fix a tear injury to his ear.
However, the brothers told an ACT Supreme Court trial on Monday that they do not know who attacked them.
Alex Bourne, 30, Daniel Grech, 28, Marcus Rappel, 43, Jeremy Leigh Jackson Reid, 26, and Isileli Paea Taholo, 31, are on trial before Justice Michael Elkaim accused of bashing the brothers in their cells at the Alexander Maconochie Centre on August 7 last year.
They have all pleaded not guilty to two charges each of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Rebecca Christiansen alleges the five men had entered into a joint criminal enterprise as they had planned and committed the attack as a group, either committing the assaults or acting as lookouts during the incident.
The judge alone trial was on Monday shown security footage from within Canberra jail of the alleged incident.
The footage, from three different cameras, did not show exactly how the brothers came to suffer the injuries as the jail's CCTV system does not film inside cells.
However, the footage shows a number of men - alleged to be the accused men - go into a cell occupied by the younger of the alleged victims, before the men then go upstairs into his brother’s cell.
The older brother – who appears to be bleeding from his ear – then goes downstairs into his sibling’s cell.
A group of men confront him at the door, two punches are thrown, and the men again disappear out of sight into the cell.
Both alleged victims gave evidence on Monday, however, failed to identify their attackers.
The younger brother – who suffered the more severe injuries – said he could not remember the incident or being in hospital with injuries due to his 10-year history of drug abuse.
"I take drugs so I don’t really remember much," he said.
"My memory's, you know, gone."
He said he had used ice, buprenorphine, and methadone while in custody at the AMC.
He claimed he did not know the accused men.
The court heard two recorded phone calls the man made from the jail to two women where he spoke about the incident.
In one, he described his alleged attackers as "Como gronks" and said he had been "jumped" twice, once while in the shower washing the blood off from the first assault, after having an "argument with one".
In the second call, he said he’d been stomped and kicked and detailed some of his injuries.
When asked by the prosecutor if he could remember the incident at the time of the phone calls, he said: "I could've been off me head".
The older of the brothers, from the witness box, said he did not see who attacked him as he had used his arms to cover his head to block the blows.
"My head was down," he said.
He did, however, say he thought he heard Bourne stop the attack by saying: "That's enough".
