Reverend Dr Mark Short was chosen as the 11th bishop by a two-day gathering at the Electoral Synod in Goulburn, NSW, the Anglican church announced on Saturday afternoon.

Rev Dr Short, who will replace Bishop Stuart Robinson, was selected by a synod of 124 clergy and 175 lay representatives from across the diocese.

The new bishop, who is married with two children, currently serves as the national director of The Bush Church Aid Society and previously worked as the Rector of Turvey Park and Archdeacon of Wagga Wagga.

"Mark brings to the position a wealth of experience in national ministry with oversight and pastoral care of gospel workers across the country, as well as in parish ministry to regional and rural areas," Synod chairman Bishop Trevor Edwards said.

He was educated at Moore Theological College and the University of Durham, UK, and became an Anglican priest in 1997.

Rev Dr Short has also worked as a journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald and as a graduate economist for the Commonwealth Department of Industrial Relations.

He will assume responsibility for 62 parishes and mission districts, eight schools and agencies such as Anglicare following his consecration at the cathedral of St Saviours in Goulburn early next year.
