Marymead, the not-for-profit organisation helping vulnerable young people and their families for more than 50 years, has been chosen as the Vikings Group's next charity of the year.
Vikings Group CEO Anthony Hill said the business would be setting a new record by raising $100,000 for Marymead.
“Coming into our third year running the program, we have committed ourselves to our highest fundraising goal. It will be challenging, but it is a challenge worth accepting,'' Mr Hill said.
“Marymead provides an invaluable service to the community, which we want to recognise and support. Family values and cohesiveness are at the heart of Vikings Group, and we look forward to building a strong partnership with Marymead.''
Just as it did more than 50 years ago, Marymead is again asking the Canberra community to support its efforts to build accommodation for young people and families.
The planned three care cottages will provide short-term accommodation for children and families, from the ACT and regional NSW.
The new development will provide emergency and crisis accommodation for vulnerable children, respite accommodation for young people with disabilities and a place to call home, even for a short period, for those children who have recently left hospital as well as their families who have travelled from regional areas to access services in the ACT.
The six-bedroom houses set in landscaped gardens are expected to cost a total of $2 million.
The community can contributing by putting money towards Marymead's Buy a Brick campaign.
Each brick is being sold for $100 to raise $1.3 million to build two of the three cottages. Just over $160,000 has been raised so far. People who donate will get their name on a brick for a wall as part of the development.
The Vikings Group, meanwhile, will hold a trivia night, yoga on the greens and a rugby charity day as part of its fundraising for Marymead.
Marymead CEO Camilla Rowland was "extremely gratefull'' for the Viking Group's support.
"This opportunity will contribute significantly to our Care Cottage project and help us achieve our mission to provide hope and change for children and families in crisis,” she said.
