It's a sentence that rings out across Canberra households daily. But consider this: we train our children to use the toilet on their own, only to have to turn the bathroom light off for them once the flushing is complete.

There's room for innovation there - and Canberra twins Peta and Melanie Stamell, 35, are all over it.

The sisters, who both have dwarfism and thus "have problems that a lot of young kids have, just due to size", have invented a product called The Toggler that allows children to turn on their own bedroom and bathroom lights. Simple. And yet, there's nothing on the market like it.

The Toggler is just one of three products the Stamells are working on under umbrella company Little Products: 'making beautiful devices that give kids greater independence in spaces built for bigger people'.

The other products are the EasyUp - a hair tie perfect for small children with limited hand-eye coordination and parents who struggle with doing their child's hair - and the Chair Adapter, designed to help kids stay seated and focused while at school and at the dinner table.

"Melanie and I were always avoiding situations where we would have to sit on big furniture and we started wondering if kids were doing the same thing," Peta said.

"And it turns out, of course they were. So the Chair Adapter takes a big seat and makes it perfect for a small person.

"Pins and needles is a common side effect of sitting on a chair that's too big and fidgeting is a really big consequence of that as well because you're constantly shifting position in order to be comfortable."

Children are often forgotten as a potential audience by the world's innovators, Peta said, but dwarfism means the twins are living in a child's world every day.

"People grow out of [being small] but Melanie and I have not grown out of it and never will, so that's the reason we care - because we have the same issues children do," she said.

"Growing up with dwarfism means you're constantly trying to figure out how to navigate spaces not designed for you.

"Turning that into a commercial opportunity is a very new and very exciting thing for us."

The daughters of teachers, Peta and Melanie were "always problem solvers", Peta said. The sisters have complementary skills when it comes to innovation: Melanie is an engineer who "solves the problems" while Peta, a graphic designer, "redesigns them to look pretty and commerciable".
