The nation's capital is about to hit peak wildflower season where the natural pinks, yellows and blues of Australia's native flowers come into their own.

It's a sight that ecologists and others passionate about Australia's native landscape hope will grow even more colourful with significant work going into conserving Canberra's native grasslands.

The ACT government and community organisation Friends of Grasslands this week held a two-day forum that explored the work currently being undertaken in ACT grasslands.

Friends of Grasslands president Geoff Robertson said only about 7 per cent of the ACT was native grassland and he hoped to encourage more people to be interested in its conservation.

He said the ACT was a stronghold for the endangered striped legless lizard and an important habitat for the grassland earless dragon among other endangered species.

"Canberra is a very special place, a bastion for what we have left," Mr Robertson said.

"We say Canberra is the bush capital, I'd like it to be called the bush and grassland capital."

He said it was critically important for governments to invest in caring for native landscapes.

"Any of our ecosystems are important to keep because if they go a whole lot of [species] go with it," he said.

The ACT is home to more than 100 species of native wildflower and many of them, such as the Bulbine Lily, Blue Bells, Scaly Buttons and Early Nancy, will be in full bloom in the coming weeks.

ACT Parks and Conservation ecologist Brett Howland said the wildflowers were an integral part of native grassland.

"The flowers and roots of these wild flowers have been feeding animals like bettongs and shinglebacks for millions of years," Dr Howland said.

"Aboriginal people have used the potato-like root of many flowers as a source of food for thousands of years."

While the Australian natives might not be as large or spectacular as some of their imported cousins, Dr Howland said there is a very good reason for this.

"They have uniquely adapted to Australia's harsh and variable conditions, many of these plants are long lived and can wait for years for a good rain event to emerge," he said.

"To survive in Australia's tough conditions our wildlife flowers are not as ostentatious as the many European flowers seen throughout Canberra gardens, but it is their more subtle flower that make them uniquely Australian.

"My hope is one day we will celebrate our native flowers more than we do the flowers of other countries."

Dr Howland recommended Dunlop grassland, Mulanggari grasslands, York Park in Barton, and Kama Nature Reserve as top spots for Canberrans to get out and spot native wildflowers - just remember not to pick them.
