Porter becomes a great-grandmother

Congratulations to Ginninderra Labor MLA Mary Porter who this week became a great-grandmother for the first time.

Porter's granddaughter Leah Porter gave birth to her first child, Ava Louise Bruce, in Adelaide on Tuesday. She is a tiny bundle of love - five pounds six ounces - but has a healthy set of lungs, Porter can report after phone calls to the hospital.

Leah is the daughter of Porter's oldest son Geoffrey, who also lives in Canberra after relocating from Alice Springs.

While Porter and her husband, Ian De Landelles, have 10 grandchildren between them, Ava is their first great-grandchild.

''It's very exciting; I'm very proud,'' she said. And Ava represents a fascinating mix of cultures. Porter was born in England with a Scottish background; Leah's mother Fay is of German extraction and Ava's father Gavin Bruce has Aboriginal heritage.

Gavin and Leah met in Alice Springs, Porter explaining her family had a strong connection to the Top End after she spent 12 years as a nursing sister in Arnhem Land.
