Talk about bamboozling the opposition.

The Cougars are the ACT Oztag under 15 girls team.  Ten of the 16 members are twins and play together. Two of the girls have a male twin who also plays Oztag, but in different teams. So all up, that's six sets of twins.

Two sets of twins in the team are identical - 14-year-olds Kaylee and Samantha Charlton and Maddie and Ellie Hyland.

It keeps coach Anthony Willey on his toes, but he is used to it. He is dad to twins Cambell and Georgia, with Georgia also on the team.

Does he ever get confused?

"I did at first with Maddie and Ellie, they were hard. But as they're sort of growing and maturing, they're easier to distinguish. Sam and Kaylee are hard for everyone. I've got it now. But it's taken me three years," he said.

The team is also accomplished. They recently played in the State Cup championships in Coffs Harbour where they were the defending champions but, this time, unfortunately, were knocked out in the semi-finals.

Most of the girls go to school at Daramalan or St Francis Xavier colleges and have been playing together since under-nines.

Samantha and Abby Bailey's mum Cindy Collins said there was a special connection.

"They all met through school and they all bonded because they're twins. It's easy to be friends with a twin because you know what they're going through. So they all had this bond and then they started this team," she said.

"It's pretty incredible. When one twin scores a try, the other will be in tears and then everyone will be crying."

Georgia and Cambell's mum, Samantha Willey, said the team was "like a twin magnet".

"We joined the team a little bit later and it was like, 'Georgie's got a twin brother' and then we found out Sara had a twin brother," she said.

Anthony said they were "a really close bunch''. They will continue playing representative Oztag together, with the nationals coming up in October.

"They're such a skilful bunch. They spend a lot of time together," he said.

Abbie Bailey, 14, said there were definite advantages to playing sport with your twin.

"It's good to share the experience in such a great sport. When you get a win or when your twin scores, you're so happy for them and you have a lot of confidence and faith in your twin and it's just really good,'' Abbie said.

And they motivate each other. They "always have a training buddy".

"But it's also a bit competitive. Everything is a competition for a twin," Abbie said.

"We like to take everything to heart as well. But when we have faith in each other, I think that gets us very far."

So do they confuse the other team?

"Yeah, we do actually. They'll be like, 'watch number blah blah' and 'mark up on the other twin'. It's pretty funny," Abbie said.

And while there is a trend for girls to stop playing sport as they get older, these girls aren't about to stop.

"I just think it's a really good sport. Most of us started at a really young age. And as we grow older, we don't grow out of it, we just stay with the sport. Sometimes you can play for fun, but when you play smart it's really good to be competitive," Abbie said.

"I think we're going to go the whole way. We're going to go very far with these girls."
