But Paea Talakai’s evidence was soon dismissed as “ridiculous” and “incredible” by a prosecutor and a magistrate, the latter concluding that the man had been, at least in some way, a member of the gang.

Talakai pleaded guilty to affray in the ACT Magistrates Court after a brawl at the Capital Men’s Club, a strip club in the industrial suburb of Fyshwick.

The violent all-in melee had erupted in the early hours of August 20 last year, as members of the Comanchero gathered in Canberra for the club's “memorial run”.

There were about 100 Comanchero and associates in Canberra for the gathering, the court heard.

That evening there were dozens were out drinking at the Fyshwick strip club.

The man who claimed to be the national president of the club was there, as was an alleged leader of the Victorian branch, former model Hasan Topal, who smashed a glass on his head before removing his shirt.

One man lay unconscious before dragging himself up only to be beaten again, as bum bags flew and a man at one point used the stripper pole to launch himself into an assault.

Talakai, the towering, shirtless figure in surveillance footage of the incident, was sentenced on Tuesday to nine months imprisonment, with five of those months to be served full time.

The 27-year-old Queensland man kissed his girlfriend and promised to call her before being led away by corrections officers.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston found Talakai's was not the worst type of affray; there could have been weapons involved, more damage done, or the violent scene taken place at an airport or shopping centre.

His lawyer Adrian McKenna had told the court his client knew he had problems with alcohol and anger management, and had voluntarily been seeking treatment with a psychologist.

The man had been on bail in Queensland since late last year, and there was no evidence he had breached the condition that he not associate with any Comanchero members.

But it was not Talakai's first instance of violence, and he had not in the past complied with court orders.

The magistrate also found beyond a reasonable doubt that Talakai was a Comanchero, and used that as an aggravating factor in the man's sentencing.

The evidence that Talakai had given claiming he was not was "incredible", Mr Theakston said.

"Just implausible."

Talakai admitted he had been a prospecting member of another club, the Bandido, before new anti-bikie laws came into place in Queensland in 2013, but said he had not joined any club since.

He said he was invited to Canberra and the memorial run by a person he had met just that one time.

He was not and did not want to be a member, but wanted to "see what it was about".

Once in Canberra, Talakai said he was handed, and put on, a jumper designed for full members of the Comanchero; there was a separate “supporter” jumper for those who were not patched members.

He said he was handed the jumper at the beginning of the run by a person he had never met before.

But Talakai's answers were “utterly ridiculous”, said prosecutor Anthony Williamson.

He pointed to evidence given by a detective from Canberra's anti-bikie taskforce that physical reprisal awaited those who wore club clothing reserved for full members.

Mr Williamson suggested it “did not add up” that a man who claimed not to be involved with the gang and had no desire to be accepted an invitation from a person he had never met to travel hundreds of kilometres to Canberra to support him.

The court also heard a Queensland Comanchero member had told police that Talakai was a member of the gang, and was the sergeant at arms, a ranking role.

The prosecutor accused Talakai of “lying through his teeth”.

“Certainly not, sir,” the man replied.

Talakai will be eligible for release from the Alexander Maconochie Centre in December.

Another five alleged Comanchero are expected to appear before the court on similar charges next month.
