Registrations are now open for The Canberra Times Fun Run, which will be held on September 23.

Participants can choose from 1km, 5km or 10km routes, with each course taking runners past some of the city's most famous landmarks, including Lake Burley Griffin and the Parliamentary Triangle.

The thousands of runners expected to take part are encouraged to set up a fundraising page on everydayhero.com.au to support the event's official charity partner, the Heart Foundation.

Heart disease is the biggest killer of Australians, with more than 55,000 people experiencing a heart attack in this country each year.

Heart Foundation ACT chief executive Tony Stubbs said that with one in every 100 babies born with a heart defect and no cure for chronic heart failure, cardiovascular disease took a big toll on our community.

"The Canberra Times Fun Run is an opportunity to share our message about the risks for heart disease and the benefits of being physically active,” Mr Stubbs said.

“We encourage entrants to become heart heroes and raise vital funds for world-class research and patient support programs.”

The fun run has been held on Father's Day in recent years, but will take place a few weeks later in 2018.

Fairfax Events head of sport Sarah Young said the scheduling of the event on September 23 date meant it would coincide with another of the capital's most-loved events.

“Following celebrations at the fun run finale, participants and spectators will be able to take a short walk across to Commonwealth Park to experience Floriade, Canberra’s stunning spring festival of flowers, ensuring a perfect day out for the whole family," she said.
