Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said a big pool of cold air had moved across the region.

"In the Central Tablelands as well there were reports of snow. Not uncommon, but lovely stuff to see," Ms Westcott said.

Elevations above 800 metres would have seen slight dustings, with iconic Mount Ainslie at 842 metres.

In the NSW alpine region, Perisher has recorded 40cm of snow with another 20cm expected overnight on Tuesday.

Ms Westcott said a cold front will move around the snow fields on Friday, dumping about 20cm of snow over the weekend.

The front will bring strong winds on Friday and Saturday.

"Saturday's a bit of a write off, but Sunday and Monday will be slightly better," Ms Westcott said.

Ms Westcott said snow will keep falling next week.

In Canberra conditions will get warmer as the weekend approaches with 18 degrees expected on Saturday.

On Wednesday, temperatures will drop as low as zero degrees in the morning, compared to 2.4 degrees on Tuesday morning.

Canberra Airport recorded 6.6mm of rain in the 24 hours up to 9am on Tuesday, with a chance on Wednesday of another millimetre before dry conditions on Thursday and Friday.

Over the weekend at the NSW south coast, north-westerly  winds blowing in from the desert will keep things warm and sunny on Friday and Saturday with temperatures up to 23 and 25 degrees respectively.

But by Sunday, an expected south-westerly front will bring cold winds and a drop of 18 degrees.

The winds causing havoc at the ski fields over the weekend will mean bigger swell out by the south coast, with wave sizes increasing by Saturday.

"But it might be a little bit dangerous," Ms Westcott said.

"At the moment sea surface temperatures are somewhere between 16 to 18 degrees."

But Ms Westcott advised people to check the forecast closer to the weekend to see if the front was still expected.
