On Tuesday the Australian National University launched its very own space agency, InSpace, which hopes to harness talent from all faculties across the school.
Professor Anna Moore, who will head the new institute, said the university has supplied funding to closely match Australia's own federal space agency which received a $50 million funding boost at the last federal budget.
Professor Moore got the idea after taking part in an expert panel on a federal review of Australia's space industry capability.
"It's kind of its duty to do so. The university sector needs to co-fund this story for Australia," Professor Moore said.
The agency will not only be looking for the traditional astronomers, astrophysicists or earth scientists but also those researching business, finance, strategy, public policy or law.
"It's funded from a high level within ANU, it's recognised that there's talent across the entire university which is embedded in the siloed kind of college structure," Professor Moore said.
This would give InSpace the chance to tap into literally any field as they hunt for ideas valuable or transformative to the industry, she said.
The institute would work with government agencies, the University of New South Wales and industry groups across the planet.
Professor Moore hoped the institute would help develop policies and regulations to streamline development in the industry and ease access to space.
With spacefaring becoming more of a commercial enterprise, Professor Moore said the laws around spacefaring would need to be studied.
"We're seeing a lot more small satellites going up into space. What happens if one hits another? What are the legal implications of that? The regulatory side that needs to be clear," she said.
Developing space-age technology at the university won't just be a boon for astronauts as InSpace will look to fund commercially viable products for different industries.
Professor Moore pointed to InSpace's first flagship project, infrared technology, which not only helps astronomers look out into space but could help other scientists study the earth.
She said she had been inspired to be an astronomer since she was four and hoped she could inspire other women to get involved in the industry,
"The top three positions so far have been filled by women. They were the right people for the right job," Professor Moore said.
She said InSpace had been embraced by the university's vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt, a Nobel prize-winning astrophysicist himself.
