Straight plays strike back amid a flood of musicals

Occasionally I wondered in 2018 if the straight play was under siege, so exuberant and many were the large cast musicals that lined up this year. Fame (Supa), Jesus Christ Superstar (Canberra Philharmonic Society) and the gentle and circus-full Barnum, complete with elephant (Philo again), The Wedding Singer (Queanbeyan Players), people turning green for Shrek (Free-Rain), and the wonderfully sardonic Heathers (Dramatic Productions); everyone in town seemed to be dancing and singing.
