The Canberra-based club received more than $5000 in new equipment from the South Coast branch of Surf Life Saving NSW, including a new rescue board, several new nipper boards and three Little Annie's - resuscitation training dolls.

The Canberra-Mollymook Nippers commenced their inaugural season in November and will continue through to late March.

They followed on from the success of the Canberra-Broulee Nippers which began offering Canberra children the opportunity to be trained in surf life saving since 2016.

The Mollymook-attached club has about 60 nippers in the capital. They conduct training once per week and travel to Mollymook for ocean training once a month.

Canberra-Mollymook operations manager Peter Innes said the new equipment and the ongoing support from their south coast counterparts was a massive boost.

"It allows us to compete straight away," Mr Innes said.

"It means we don't need to fundraise at the same time and we can actually start teaching the kids."

After growing up on the Central Coast and then moving about as far from the ocean as you can get to West Wyalong as a teenager, that didn't stop Mr Innes representing NSW in surf life saving.

Given his own experience, he said there was no reason Canberra children couldn't experience the same success at surf lifesaving as coastal kids.

South Coast branch president Steve Jones echoed this sentiment saying that the organisation viewed its Canberra nippers no different to South Coast nippers and said they would receive all the same opportunities.

In fact he said much of the organisations focus was on children and adults alike that may not have the chance to frequently swim in the ocean.

"You've got such a large capital city here of 400,000 odd people," Mr Jones said.

"A lot of these people go to the coast at Christmas and enjoy the beaches.

"And it's those that swim infrequently [in the ocean] that often get in trouble."

During last summer 84 per cent of people rescued on the south coast were from the ACT.

Mr Jones said there had been instances over the years of 12-year-old nippers that have rescued full grown adults at unpatrolled beaches.

"When they go away from us they go away with skills for life," he said.

Two of Carly Saeedi's four children are in the nippers program and she said it gave her peace of mind at the beach.

"With four kids it's hard to watch them all and also let them have some independence," Mrs Saeedi said.

"I wanted them to learn the dangers of the surf and they're also learning great life skills like CPR they could use outside the beach."

She said the Canberra-based sessions complemented the beach sessions well and she could see her children grow in confidence in the pool before trying out their skills in the ocean.
