Census data shows the suburbs in Canberra with the highest marriage and divorce rates, with more than 65 per cent of residents in the Woden suburb having tied the knot.

It was closely followed by Forde on 64.8 per cent, Chapman on 62.3, Fadden on 62.1 and Weetangera on 61.6.

The top 10 suburbs were rounded out by Macarthur and Isaacs on 60 per cent, and Yarralumla, Amaroo and Crace on 59 per cent.

Those living in the city's inner north were the least likely to be married, with just 17 per cent of Civic residents walking down the aisle.

Braddon, Turner, Dickson and Reid were also low on the list for married residents.

Ken Mansell and his wife Vicki have been married for 20 years and live in Chapman, one of the suburbs high on the list for the marriage rate.

Mr Mansell said there had been an increase in the number of young, married couples moving out to the area.

"We moved here just after the bushfire, and we were one of the youngest couples around when we first moved in," Mr Mansell said.

"Honestly, now I feel like one of the older ones."

Ann Evans, an associate professor at the ANU School of Demography said suburban areas were more likely to have a higher marriage rate than suburbs in inner-city areas.

"We see low rates of marriage in inner-city areas in Canberra because they are close to universities, where people are mostly single, and there's a lot of housing like apartments there," Associate Professor Evans said.

"Those who are more likely to be married are in detached housing, which is mostly in the suburbs."

The demographer said Canberra had higher levels of marriage compared to other capital cities.

"There's an association of higher levels of marriage in small areas like Canberra with the percentage of the population who have higher levels of education," she said.

"The higher the level of education people have, the more likely you are to marry."

Many of the same inner-city areas in Canberra that recorded low levels of marriage also recorded the highest rates of de facto partners.

Almost one in four people in Civic said they were living in a de facto partnership, followed by Braddon, Kingston and Barton.

O'Malley and Isaacs had the lowest amount, both being under 6 per cent.

Meanwhile, those living in suburbs around Tuggeranong and Belconnen were the most likely to be either separated or divorced.

Charnwood topped the list with 15.7 per cent being separated or divorced, closely followed by Greenway with 15.1 per cent, Holt on 15, and Rivett, Richardson and Scullin all on 14.6.

Civic residents are the least likely to be married but they're among the most likely to be divorced, with about 6 per cent having split from their partner.

The Belconnen suburb of Page has the highest proportion of widowed residents in Canberra, coming in at 11.8 per cent of its residents over 15.

According to the census data, 69 Canberra suburbs came in above the average marriage rate for the ACT, which was 47.9 per cent of all Canberrans.

Across the territory, 10.4 per cent of ACT residents have either been separated or divorced, 3.9 per cent are widowed, while 37.9 per cent have never been married.

The statistics relate to the population aged over 15.
