"We received so many responses we eventually weren't able to respond to all of them - sorry everybody!" Elliott said.

The most memorable recommendations they received were "kangaroos (alive)", form one lane and the Belconnen owl statue, all of which they drew. There was even one mysterious email that simply listed "new team", without any context.

One trend among emails was that "people really loved Dickson".

Art aside, the highlights of their stay were meeting the locals of the bush capital and getting to experience Canberra-isms for themselves.

They even got to encounter our unofficial black-and-white mascots during peak season. So were they initiated with a good swooping or two?

"Definitely," Elliott said. "We were attacked."

"Being from Perth, my body instinctively knew what to do. But I had to educate Tim, who is scared of the animals in Australia."

Despite Tim Vaughan-Sanders hailing from the land of a more docile bird, the Kiwi, he appreciated Canberra's magpie safety tactics.

"We loved seeing cyclists rock around with the little cable ties in their helmets. No one seems self-conscious about that. It's a question of: 'Do I care if I look silly? Or would I like my head to get stitches?' " Vaughan-Sanders said.

After 31 days capturing Canberra in one illustration a day, Elliott and Vaughan-Sanders are exhibiting their works at the Embassy of Belgium in Canberra. The exhibition also features their 31 drawings of a recent stint in Belgium.

Despite the differences, the couple believes Belgium is a good fit for Canberra because of the war memorials and the locals who love their underrated locations.

"Lots of Canberrans ask: 'Why Canberra?' and talk it down a little bit, but there is that love there. It's a subtle kind of pride. So that was really interesting. And finding out there's so much more to Canberra than national galleries and politics," Elliott said.

"When we went to Paris and Barcelona, no one asked: 'Why did you come here?' Because they know. Whereas in Canberra and Belgium, people ask. And it's not like it's an identity crisis, it's just people enjoying being complimented about their locations which aren't always considered obvious hotspots," Vaughan-Sanders said.

"Meeting people from Canberra is rare and when you do meet them, they know they're onto a good thing here."
