The possums were all found underneath an electric power pole. RSPCA inspectors attended on one occasion and suggested electrocution as the cause of death.

One resident, Caroline Wenger, has lived on the street for almost 22 years and could not remember ever finding a dead possum before. She found one in January and then two more within three weeks of each other, with the most recent discovered at the end of August.

Ms Wenger described the experience as distressing.

"The first little possum I saw had his little tongue sticking out," she said.

"It was perfect in every way, except that it was dead."

"We're supposed to protect wildlife in the ACT."

Ms Wenger said she alerted the ACT government and Evoenergy to the deaths in the hope something would be done to protect the wildlife.

She said after Evoenergy staff attended the site and tested the pole she was informed it was not faulty and that a possum guard was not able to be fitted to the pole. She was told the pole would not be replaced until it was deemed faulty.

"Evoenergy has been informed on two occasions that the pole is killing wildlife," Ms Wenger said.

"They have the technology to fix it and if they don't fix it, they are knowingly using infrastructure that's a hazard to wildlife. That's negligence."

Following questions about the deaths from the Sunday Canberra Times a spokeswoman for Evoenergy said a staff member had assessed the pole on Thursday and a possum guard would be installed.

"Evoenergy complies with all relevant environmental protection and nature conservation requirements relating to the protection of wildlife," the spokeswoman said.

She said the company understood there were no specific requirements governing the exclusion of wildlife from electricity infrastructure.

The Nature Conservation Act 2014 prohibits the killing of any native or protected animal.

A spokesman for the ACT government and an ACT Policing spokesman said Evoenergy had not committed an offence as there was no intention to kill native wildlife with the infrastructure.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said inspectors had attended one complaint about power lines this year and found two possums with blistering on their hands and feet, but there was insufficient evidence of an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 1992.

The government spokesman said they did not keep statistics on wildlife killed from electrocution but said ACT rangers reported it was a "very rare" occurrence.

ACT Wildcare vice president Martin Lind said dealing with a potentially electrocuted animal was something the organisation trained its volunteers to handle. He said it was not a particularly common occurrence but added this may be because the animal would not usually survive.

ACT Wildcare currently has about 40 possums in care, with the most common reason being orphaned young.

Mr Lind said power poles become a means of transport for possums when trees get cut down, so this was a scenario that was likely on the increase in the ACT.
