These are the heartbreaking images, drawn by two children, handed to a Canberra magistrate to help the court understand their grief after their father was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.

The 37-year-old father-of-three had been riding his motorcycle along Southern Cross Drive when he collided with Matthew Thomas Wootton's Nissan 4WD, which had been crossing the intersection, at the Ratcliffe Crescent intersection in Florey on February 15 about 5.10pm.

Wootton, 47, has pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to a charge of negligent driving occasioning death.

The court heard a number of victim impact statements from the deceased’s family during a sentence hearing on Wednesday.

The girls, both too young to put their feelings into words, instead opted to express their heartache through an illustration.

In one, under the title 'What I miss about my Dad', one daughter, aged 9, listed his love, his laugh, himself, him talking and his courage, and, finally, everything.

The younger of the girls, aged 7, simply drew herself standing with her father, smiling and happy.

His eldest daughter wrote that her father had been "pure sunshine", but she had been cast into darkness and fear without him.

She spoke of the "crippling trauma" his death had caused, and of suffering a pain she would not wish on anybody.

"I miss my Dad. I would do anything to have him back," she wrote.

Their mother, through tears, told the court of her never-ending heartache, how her partner had paid the ultimate price, and the family had been reduced to a lifetime of suffering.

"It's so hard," she said.

She said he had been robbed of the chance to watch his girls grow up, walk them down the aisle on their wedding day, or hold his first grandchild.

Wootton, from the witness stand, told the court how he had waited for a car to pass before entering the intersection, but had not seen the motorcycle.

He said the motorcyclist had done nothing wrong.

"I acknowledge the accident was my fault," he said.

The court heard Wootton had been to counselling to help deal with the grief and anguish caused by causing the man’s death.

He said he knew it was something that he would have to carry for the rest of his life.

"I’m immensely sorry for their loss," he said of the bereaved family.

Defence lawyer, Ken Archer, said there had been nothing in Wootton’s driving to indicate he was a dangerous driver.

He said a moment of inattention had had catastrophic results, and described the futility of the loss of a life in a traffic accident.

The court heard the curve of the road may have contributed to the motorycle being obscured by another car.

Mr Archer categorised the offence as low-to-mid range.

Prosecutor James Walker argued the evidence indicated Wootton had been driving carefully and guarded against risks, but had then abandoned that caution before driving through the intersection.

Mr Walker said the incident involved a serious amount of negligence as their had been a death involved.

He said a jail term was the only appropriate sentence.

Magistrate Louise Taylor will hand down sentence next month.
