The St Mary MacKillop College student, who hopes to become a lawyer when he leaves school, is one of the millions of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the country sitting NAPLAN tests this week.

"I would have intervals, maybe 10 minutes of work and then 10 minutes of watching a video on Youtube or something like that," the 13-year-old said.

The national assessment program this week assesses literacy and numeracy skills of students and for the first time, the test was online.

Fellow student Katie Williams said music was the thing that got her through practice papers.

"I used to listen to music while I did my work because it always just calms me and makes me see the good side of what I'm doing," she said.

Students sat the reading, writing and language conventions earlier this week.

Katie said she enjoyed the reading part of the online assessment.

"I found the reading pretty good - it was pretty easy and like, just fun to do all together," she said.

"The exams were similar to what we were doing in class lately so it wasn't too hard."

The school is one of 106 ACT schools taking part in the national assessment's online roll-out.

All public schools in the ACT are doing NAPLAN online this year. Ten independent schools are waiting to transition after 2018.

"I find it better on the computers instead of on sheets because I just found it easier to write and it was quicker," Luca said.

"Not having the stress that when you write on paper that if you stuff something up you've got to rub it out and there's still something on the paper. Now you have the neat writing on the screen and everything took a lot of stress off the activities we were doing."

Principal Michael Lee said schools and students should not be defined by NAPLAN or the Year 12 ATAR and other merit lists and rankings.

"The school welcomes the rich data that NAPLAN provides and expertly uses that data in teaching and learning, assessment, professional learning for our teachers and in our resourcing," Mr Lee said. "This is often the overlooked value of NAPLAN."
