National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony, Lake Burley Griffin, 9am

Join 25 of Australia's newest citizens on Rond Terrace on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin on Australia Day morning in this special ceremony.

The ceremony starts at 9am and is free and open to the public.

Activities on the Patrick White Lawns, from 4pm

The Patrick White Lawns, next to the National Library, will host a suite of free activities from 4pm where you can try a cricket fast bowl, practice your golf swing and so much more.

Food trucks at the lawns will offer something to eat, or visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic.

And you'll be in perfect position for the fireworks over the lake and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge at 9pm.

Australia Day Concert, Regatta Point, from 4pm

Starting at 4pm at the Regatta Point Stage, a free outside concert headlined by Rogue Traders will also feature a mix of local artists, including The Advocates, Los Chavos and Big Boss Groove. There will also be a flyover by the Royal Australian Air Force at 6.45pm.

Carillon Concert, Aspen Island, 12.30pm

Senior Carillonist Thomas Laue will perform the free Australia Day Concert, starting at 12.30pm with the national anthem and improvisations on the theme of Waltzing Matilda.

The recital will include selections from 10 Australian Miniatures for Carillon, and some of Laue's own compositions and arrangements before the concert wraps up at 1.15pm.

National Museum Australia Day Family Festival, from 10am

Join the museum for tours, music, dance, demonstrations, games fun and food from 10am.

Indigenous-themed activities from 10am to 12.30pm include tours of the First Australians gallery and a Tastes of the Bush display.

See Roman life recreated by members of Australia's enthusiastic re-enactment groups between 1 and 3pm, before an Australia Day barbecue, music and games on the Acton Peninsula ahead of the fireworks at 9pm.

A cost applies for some activities, including entry to the Rome exhibition.

The display from Commonwealth Avenue Bridge over Lake Burley Griffin begins at 9pm and runs for about 15 minutes. Good vantage spots include Commonwealth Park, Kings Park, the Patrick White lawns, outside the National Museum, Mount Ainslie lookout and Red Hill lookout.

Transport Canberra will be running its usual Saturday bus timetable on Australia Day, with the Blue Rapid 300 route dropping passengers off on both sides of Commonwealth Avenue at Regatta Point. Usual fares apply.

After the fireworks, free chartered Transport Canberra buses will run from the Commonwealth Avenue bus stops at Regatta Point to the City, Gungahlin, Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong bus stations between 9.30pm and 11.30pm.

A Sunday timetable will run for the public holiday on Monday, January 28.

Road and lake closures

Commonwealth Avenue Bridge will be closed in both directions from Parkes Way to Flynn Place for 15 minutes at 9pm, January 26 to allow for the fireworks display.

Lake Burley Griffin's Central Basin will be closed from 5am to midnight to allow set up for the firework display to take place.

Between 5.30am and 11pm, the following roads will be closed:

Between 11am and 11pm, Albert Street East, Parkes will be closed.

The Regatta Point Car park will be restricted access only between 11am and 2pm and then only accessible to VIPs and pass holders from 2pm to 11pm.

The Brumbies will take on the Melbourne Rebels in a trial match at Viking Park Erindale on Australia Day. Gates open at 5.30pm and kick-off at 6.30pm. Free entry and lots of activities for the whole family.

National Basketball League returns to the capital for the first time in 10 years, with the Illawarra Hawks playing the Cairns Taipans at AIS Arena. Doors open at 2pm, tip off at 2.50pm. Tickets available from Ticketek.

Even after breaking its heatwave record for the number of days above 40 degrees, Canberra is still in for hot weather on Australia Day, with the temperature tipped to reach 39.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it will be hot and partly cloudy, with a 20 per cent chance of rain. There is a chance of thunderstorms later in the day and light winds.
