Winner impressed right out of the gate

Winner impressed right out of the gate

In a borrowed hat and lace dress from Target, 19-year-old Kate Goodwin, of Yarralumla, beat 25 young hopefuls to be deemed the 2013 Face of Canberra Racing.

Despite the gloomy weather, some of Canberra's best-dressed young women flocked to a rain-soaked Thoroughbred Park for the announcement on Sunday. Ms Goodwin, a waitress, will replace outgoing Canberra Racing ambassador Brittney McGlone and was "on cloud nine".

''I've been competing in Fashions on the Field for three years and have loved it. I've been gathering tips on how to win for a long time now and I'm so excited to have won, especially during the Centenary year,'' Ms Goodwin said.

She said classic racewear elegance was her inspiration. She didn't disappoint, looking every inch the winner even when sitting in the grandstand as the rainclouds rolled in and forced the finale off the track and back into a function room.

''I decided on a classic elegant look with the covered shoulders and the longer dress, so I was thankful the weather was actually a little on the cooler side.

''Even though my hat was from the summer season with the tones of green, yellow and white through it, I thought pairing it with all neutral accessories tied the outfit together well,'' she said.

Face of Canberra Racing judge and Mix 106.3 presenter Carla Bignasca said although judging a winner was difficult, Ms Goodwin was a standout in the field of stylish contenders.

''Kate was impressive early on in the heats, right through to the final and was impressive during her impromptu Q&A segment because she is so well-spoken, passionate about fashion, the Canberra region and racing,'' Ms Bignasca said.

Ms Goodwin's first job in her new position will be attending the Black Opals Stakes Day at Thoroughbred Park on March 10. The role, a year-long commitment, will involve a number of public speaking engagements and official appearances in and around Canberra.
