More trouble after Risdon prison rampage

An inmate has been injured in another incident at Hobart's Risdon Prison Complex just hours after two guards were hurt.

Seven prisoners in the medium security Gordon Unit went on a rampage around 8.30pm on Monday, causing significant property damage.

The incident came after maximum security inmates attacked guards with broom handles yesterday afternoon, leaving one with a facial fracture and another with a dislocated shoulder.

The police tactical response group ended both incidents quickly.

The prisoners involved remain in lockdown as police and officials investigate.Corrections Minister Nick McKim said no weapons had been used in the second incident and one inmate had minor injuries.

"This incident was resolved once again very quickly and very professionally by prison staff and there was one minor injury to one of the inmates involved in that incident," he said.

"Both of these incidents have been referred to Tasmania Police for investigation and I will wait both for a report from the prison service an for Tasmania Police to conclude their investigations before we can go into much more detail."

The incidents are the latest in a spate of trouble at Risdon, which led Mr McKim to appoint British prisons expert Brian Edwards in February to oversee reforms.
