Green Square, Broadway and parts of Surry Hills were among areas that needed extended late-night trading hours, according to more than 10,000 residents and visitors surveyed on the city's nightlife.

The feedback was part of the council’s first review in more than a decade of the planning controls that determine trading hours and locations of night-time premises across Sydney.

It showed strong support for more late-night venues in fast-growing parts of the city including Green Square, as well as more diverse late-night businesses including shops, restaurants, cafes, small bars, live music, performance spaces and cultural venues.

Residents also wanted to increase the size of late-night trading precincts across the city without taking away from established after-dark hotspots like Newtown.

Lord mayor Clover Moore said in a statement the feedback showed residents and visitors wanted "a diverse and exciting night-time economy", not a city that was unsafe "or that shuts down as soon as the sun goes down".

“Sydney’s nightlife is a complex ecosystem which has undoubtedly been impacted by the NSW
Government’s ill-considered lockout laws and other factors," she said.

“The night-time economy is critical to Sydney’s future, so it’s essential we get the balance right and make sure our planning controls keep pace with the city as it changes and grows."

There was also strong backing for small businesses to stay open later in areas such as Oxford Street and Surry Hills, and host small-scale cultural activities, such as public talks, without formal approval.

And those surveyed also supported a proposal for residential developments to be designed and built to "manage" noise from an existing venue.

Those suggestions were floated in the council's Open and Creative City discussion paper, released last year in a bid to revive the city's beleaguered late-night economy.

The results from the consultation will be used to draft new planning controls, which are expected to be exhibited for public feedback later this year.
