During a study trip to schools in the northern and western parts of the State Dr Grace Boelke found three separate types of outback ophthalmia, known locally as "bunged eye", "sandy blight" and "red spot". The eyesight of older children, with both acute and chronic ophthalmia was very defective, due largely to repeated attacks of the malady. The heat, glare and hot, dry, dusty winds of the west irritate and weaken the eyes, leaving them vulnerable to infections carried by myriads of various flies.

£50 per day penalty for over-height skyscrapers

The Height of Buildings Bill, amended and passed by the City of Sydney, stated that a building that was not exclusively used for purposes of public worship, or not a chimney stack or sewer ventilator, should not under any circumstances be erected or increased to a greater height than 150 feet. A penalty of £50 was slated upon conviction for disobedience, failure to comply with an order to take down or remove any part of the building erected in defiance would result in a £50 per day penalty.

Newtown’s jubilee

Elaborate preparations were being made by the residents of Newtown to celebrate the Jubilee of the municipality. An enthusiastic citizens' committee mapped out a programme of festivities. Five-thousand schoolchildren and cadets were to take part in a procession at the University Oval on Jubilee Day. King Street was to be gaily decorated and brightly illuminated, with the Town Hall receiving special attention, festooned with coloured lights and a rising sun, emblematical of the rising of Newtown.
