One man died and two younger men were rescued after disaster overtook a fishing party when their twin-engined launch was sucked into the famous bombora near the Old Man's Hat, North Head. The three men were speeding back and forth between the Heads trailing for kingfish and tailor, at times travelling very close to the cliffs at North Head. Almost abreast of the Old Man's Hat, the powerful craft was suddenly sucked into the bombora, unable to withstand the tremendous suction.

Child rescued from a burning tent

Mr English, of Moorfields Road, Lakemba, acted bravely when he jumped from the top rail of a fence and through the roof of a burning tent to rescue a child whose clothes had caught alight. Mr Cochrane, his wife, and three-year-old child, Frank, lived in a roughly-built tent in a paddock near the home of Mr English when the bags which formed the greater part of the building caught alight from a spark from the stove. The child was the only person inside and was burned about the ears and hands.

Street singing children to be prohibited

The Minister for Education, Mr Davies, decided that in future children would be prohibited from singing or begging in the city streets as he regarded the practice as objectionable and its continuance a disgrace to the State. He said that the Child Welfare Department provided for children under 14 years of age so there was no need for it. Children had been observed singing in the streets while a few doors away people of undesirable type were seen waiting to take the money from the unfortunate children.
