Construction on missing links in Sydney's chain of cycling routes, which allow cyclists to cross the city from north to south and east to west without mixing with traffic, will begin within weeks.

On Monday, the City of Sydney council endorsed its cycling strategy, which prioritises connecting the bike network to make Sydney safer to ride and ease congestion on public transport.

The plan outlines the council's ambition to finish the network's 11 main corridors that bring people into the city centre within 12 years.

It also plans to finish 60 per cent of its web of routes that link homes and businesses to the major cycleways by 2030.

Public feedback on the draft survey showed residents were particularly in favour of completing safe cycle routes in the CBD. These have been the most politically contentious cycle paths in the city, with the state government repeatedly stalling on their construction.

But the council said 92 per cent of 2000 people surveyed on the draft plan thought a network of regional cycleways extending throughout inner Sydney was "extremely important" or "very important".

"What we heard so strongly from people is they want more, and faster," the council's cycling strategy manager, Fiona Campbell, said.

Those surveyed wanted to see the completion of safe cycle routes along King Street, as well as tracks along Pyrmont Bridge and Harbour Bridge.

But Ms Campbell said the council's desire to complete most of the network in little more than a decade would depend on faster planning approvals in the CBD and funding from the NSW government.

She said the council would accelerate its development of priority bike routes, including Bondi to the CBD along Moore Park Road and around Central Station.

"The other urgent priority is King Street because there are so many businesses there yet staff have no safe way to cycle to work," she said.

Construction on the cycleway connecting Green Square to Randwick should start in the next fortnight, followed by works on the route between Wilson Street in Redfern and Burren Street in Erskineville within a couple of months.

The council proposes future works to fill gaps around Redfern station and to boost cycling capacity in parts of the CBD and in the Central to Eveleigh corridor to meet growing demand.

Potential routes could be built along the southern boundary of Moore Park Golf Course to connect Green Square to the University of NSW, and from the Domain to Kings Cross, via Woolloomooloo.

The City will also work with the state government and developers on bike infrastructure for sites including Waterloo, the Bays Precinct and Barangaroo.

The council committed to a series of measures to bolster safety, including bike-safe upgrades to storm grates and replacing bike shoulder lanes. It will also push for 30 km/h speed limits in parts of the inner city.

The strategy includes a goal to boost the proportion of female residents who ride a bike at least once a week from 13 per cent last year to 25 per cent by 2030.

A Transport for NSW spokesman said the state government had committed $250 million towards active transport programs over the past five years, including the cycleway connecting Central Station to the Harbour Bridge.

"Transport for NSW is working closely with City of Sydney, including on plans to complete the King Street cycleway, and we are assessing the feasibility of some other routes proposed by the city," the spokesman said.

Lord mayor Clover Moore said Sydney's rising population meant cycleways were vital to keep streets moving, ease traffic congestion and encourage more people to ride bikes.

“Around one million people live within a 30-minute bike ride to the inner city, but we simply can’t expect more people to give riding a go if they don’t feel safe and supported to do so," she said.
