Real-estate agent murder accused in court

The man charged with murdering a Sydney real-estate agent may undergo a mental health assessment, his lawyer says.

The case against Adam Brewer, 33, who is accused of stabbing Vissa Esan to death at the office of his Pendle Hill business, was mentioned briefly at Fairfield Local Court on Friday.

Brewer's lawyer, Daniel Wakim, says he may apply to have the case dealt with under section 32 of the Mental Health Act.

It is likely Brewer, from Toongabbie, would have to undergo a mental health assessment before a section 32 order could be granted.

Friday's hearing was adjourned to Parramatta Local Court on May 8.

Brewer, who is in custody, did not appear in court and no bail application was made on his behalf.

Mr Wakim made no comment as he left court.

Mr Esan - whose wife, Shanika Madushani, 28, is pregnant - was found covered in blood in a back alley off Pendle Way, near his business Aussie Unity Real Estate, on Thursday morning.

The 47-year-old died a short time later at Westmead Hospital after suffering at least one stab wound to the chest. No weapon was recovered.

Brewer was arrested on Thursday morning at a cement company in Hallmark Street, about a kilometre north of the crime scene.

Police said on Thursday night the attack took place inside Mr Esan's business premises, contradicting earlier information that it happened in the back alley.

It remains unclear if the attack was targeted or random.

Mr Esan and his family lived in Kellyville, in Sydney's north-west, after emigrating to Australia about 20 years ago from Sri Lanka.

Tributes to the popular businessman have poured in from family and colleagues.

"He was a really popular guy and community leader," one colleague said. "He was very kind-hearted and helped all his fellow Tamil people.

"We all loved him, he was a great guy."
