Somersby factory fire affects traffic on M1

A factory fire on the central coast is burning out of control, despite firefighters calling in help from Sydney and Newcastle.

A total of 18 crews, including a specialist ladder platform, are battling the blaze at the recycling plant in Somersby, as it threatens to spread to nearby silos.

A spokesman from Fire and Resuce NSW says the fire is contained to the factory area.

It is not yet known what caused the fire to break out, however it appears to have started on the lower levels of the PAR Recycling plant on Pile Road before spreading to the upper levels of the 100-metre by 40-metre building.

The factory was empty when the blaze broke out about 7.30pm and no one has been injured

Investigators are expected to visit the plant tomorrow morning to establish what caused the fire.

Meanwhile, motorists on the M1 Motorway and Pacific Highway have been told to drive with caution as smoke from the blaze spreads across the area.
