Between July 2013 and June 2018, there was 139 successful application to demolish a pre-1946 dwelling, with 29 approved in the past financial year.

Opposition planning spokesman Jared Cassidy said the sheer amount of Brisbane’s heritage bulldozed every year should sound alarm bells for residents across the city.

“139 historic homes over the past five years alone have been razed and despite the rhetoric from the LNP administration about protecting Brisbane’s character, all we have seen is the green light to developers at the expense of local communities,” he said.

“We need greater protection of our character homes and yet in one neighbourhood plan after the other we see fewer and fewer of these homes protected.”

The council’s city planning chairman, Matthew Bourke, said the council was doing more than ever before to protect the character and heritage of Brisbane.

“Council will only approve demolition of pre-1946 houses in character building areas in very limited circumstances,” he said.

“For example, where they are found to are structurally unsafe and unable to be repaired or where they have been modified so extensively through repeated extensions and alterations over many decades that they no longer represent pre-war architecture.”

Fairfax Media asked for the list of the location of the demolished homes but the council did not respond to this question.
