Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk will on Monday announce the start date for the reduced speed limit - Monday, November 5 - which will be in effect between Creek Street and the Riverside Expressway.

Last month, Cr Quirk revealed he would be slashing the speed on Ann Street, and introducing new and upgraded pedestrian crossings, in response to the interim findings from council's pedestrian safety review.

There have been several incidents involving pedestrians in Brisbane this year, including the death of Ann Marie Stent, who died on May 22 after being hit by a bus while crossing Ann Street.

Cr Quirk said recent pedestrian-related road safety incidents had revealed the need for safety improvements at several sites across the city and suburbs.

"Ann Street is one of three streets in Brisbane's CBD which has been the location for a large number of pedestrian safety accidents and speed has been a contributing factor," he said.

There have been 10 serious crashes involving pedestrians in five years along the 780-metre-long stretch in question.

During a council survey, the area was also the location of about 40 "pedestrian safety issues".

"It is clear from these incidents that we need to act now and reduce the speed to 40km/h in this section of Ann Street," Cr Quirk said.

Electronic billboards will be in place this week to notify motorists about the upcoming speed limit change.

Cr Quirk said the council was giving motorists ample time and information to change their driving habits along Ann Street ahead of the official change coming into effect.

"We're asking motorists to help improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists with this new speed limit," he said.

Further safety improvements were expected to be introduced later in 2018, with the final report for the pedestrian safety review due to be delivered to the council in October.

The council reduced the speed limit to 40km/h on most CBD streets in 2009, in the hopes of slowing the accident rate, but Ann and Turbot streets stayed at 60km/h as they were considered major cross-city thoroughfares.

Turbot Street will remain as the only CBD road with a speed limit above 40km/h.
