A film producer, the co-founder of a virtual reality business and the company behind a high power electric car charger have been identified as some of Brisbane’s best when it comes to business.

On Friday night, Brisbane’s lord mayor Graham Quirk announced the winners of the 13th annual Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.
Taking out the top award was Blacklab Group managing director Tim McGahan.
Mr McGahan’s Newstead-based company has produced two international and award-winning feature films, Predestination and Winchester.
Cr Quirk said the Blacklab Group managing director had made an outstanding contribution to the industry.
“He was the youngest ever cinematographer accredited by the Australian Cinematographers Society, and is passionate about mentoring new talent,” he said.
Mr McGahan works across several areas including creative development through to financing and production.
Cr Quirk said the winner exemplified the dedication, excellence and leadership that was looked for in a Business Person of the Year.
The co-founder and chief executive of Lightweave, a company that builds virtual and augmented reality experiences, was awarded the Young Business Person of the Year award.
Sam Hussey led world-first experiences for Brisbane Festival, Brisbane Heat and oversees offices in Brisbane and Singapore and is expanding into the UK and North America.
“Sam has built a successful business while contributing to Brisbane’s reputation as a hub for the creative industries and technology,” Cr Quirk said.
Tritium, which was established by three Brisbane men and produces thousands of electric car charges a year, received the award for product innovation.
The Murarrie-based factory has produced a world-first – a high-power charger that would allow an electric vehicle to travel 150km from just five minutes of charging.
Cr Quirk said all winners had contributed greatly to Brisbane’s economy, community and reputation as Australia’s new world city.
