Traditionally, the 12 days of Christmas concludes at Twelfth Night, between January 5 and 6, when the tree is dismantled and Christmas cheer is concluded until the next December.

Of course, not everyone sticks to tradition, with tinsel and trees lingering in homes, offices and shopping centres around the city as the festive season fades.

But the council's giant Christmas tree in King George Square remains standing tall - a reminder for the thousands of workers trudging back to work on Monday that the festive season is well and truly over.

Throughout history Twelfth Night, the final day of the Christmas season, spawned many customs including visiting neighbours, sharing fresh fruit and drink and welcoming the epiphany.

The final day would see the traditional fir tree stripped of its celebratory role and laid to rest for the year.

A Brisbane City Council spokeswoman said the tree, which was put up over several days in early December, would be dismantled between Tuesday and Thursday this week.

So for those Queenslanders who prefer another tradition - leaving the decorations up until February or so before finally dragging out the plastic box and pulling the dusty reminders of Christ down - don't worry, you're not alone.
