There were 110 fires burning across the state on Monday afternoon, with a series of thunderstorms expected to pass through central Queensland.

Bureau of Meteorology Queensland weather services manager Richard Wardle said forecast thunderstorms and rain in the Wide Bay and Burnett regions could help, but also complicate, firefighting efforts.

"These storms could bring damaging to destructive winds, large to giant hail and heavy rainfall," he said.

"It could also with the variability in those gusts it could actually make firefighting quite hazardous for the folks on the ground."

Mr Wardle said the rain could also cause landslides, as burnt soil on steep terrain acted like concrete.

"What you find is that any rainfall falls, it runs off quite quickly, can cause that flash flooding, it also carries the debris of what is burnt and that can actually cause the terrain to slide as well, so that's another risk," he said.

Mr Wardle said there was a very high fire danger in the southern, south-east and central inland areas, which would ease as the week progressed.

Tropical Cyclone Owen was 1000 kilometres east of Cairns and was expected to remain offshore, although could intensify into a category two on Monday night, before weakening below category one by noon on Wednesday.

"We expect the remnant low of ex-tropical cyclone Owen ... to then move west to the east coast of Queensland," Mr Wardle said.

"It could be anywhere from Fraser Island north to the Cape York peninsula but that will bring some rains."

Mr Wardle said Queensland's heatwave conditions would likely reduce from Tuesday.

In Mareeba and Atherton, in far north Queensland, there were 10,000 people without power following severe storms, with authorities trying to restore power.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the situation on North Stradbroke Island was looking "OK" following a huge effort by firefighters.

"We're not there yet, things are improving, we have a huge effort happening right across Queensland," she said.

"But once again we still have a high to severe weather temperature out there for the next few days, easing of course when the cyclone comes in as a low towards the end of the week."

Over the past 11 days, about 11 million litres of water and fire suppressant were used across Queensland.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll said over the past 10 days, 2000 Queensland firefighters and 1200 interstate firefighters had been battling blazes.

On Tuesday, more details about the extent of the damage, which included houses and sheds, were expected to be released.
