Police said the man was riding along the Mooloolaba street when he hit a garden hose that had been hung at chest height and tied to two shrubs on either side of the street.

Investigators have asked any local residents who saw any suspicious activity in the area to come forward, with a police spokesman saying officers believe the same perpetrator "might have been up to other mischief in the area this morning".

The cyclist, a 56-year-old from the Sunshine Coast suburb of Sippy Downs, could not see the hose stretched across Goonawarra Drive, near the intersection with Quondong Street, because he was riding in low light about 5.40am.

He was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment and police have launched a public appeal for information in the hope of bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Police have also asked residents on Palm Drive, Tombarra Street, Pettigrew Street and Kalinda Avenue who have CCTV or dashcam vision showing suspicious activity to come forward.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said depending on medical advice from the hospital, the perpetrator could face charges ranging from public nuisance to assault or grievous bodily harm.
