The wild weather struck the Gold Coast, Noosa and parts of Gympie, Scenic Rim, Redland City and the Sunshine Coast on Saturday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of flash flooding and large hailstones with heavy rain as the storm moves north.

"It's expected to continue its northern trend over the next few hours and it should drift off the coast around Hervey Bay later this evening," BOM meteorologist Andrew Bufalino said.

EARLIER: Large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain are expected to hit south-east Queensland, with the possibility of very dangerous thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon following a hot and humid day in Brisbane.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting isolated but very dangerous storms with giant hail of greater than five centimetres and destructive winds with gusts of 125 kilometres per hour were possible.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the weather bureau about 2.20pm for parts of the Scenic Rim, moving towards Mount Barney.

A second warning at 3.10pm urged people in parts of Ipswich, Logan, Somerset, Lockyer Valley, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council Areas to also prepare for severe weather.

BOM senior forecaster Michelle Berry said a trough generating instability on Saturday, as well as the moisture in the air, were to blame for the expected change in weather.

"Severe thunderstorm weather can see wind gusts of over 90km/h, hail larger than two centimetres and heavy rainfall," she said.

"This severe weather is looking to be evident this afternoon right through to this evening with the prediction of large hail and wind gusts of 125km/h per hour.

"It is certainly a day for people to keep an eye on the radar and to check to see if there are any weather updates."

Ms Berry said the prediction of severe thunderstorm would continue on Sunday and would affect areas including Taroom, Roma, St George and Dirranbandi.

"Tomorrow it will move further north and west with, again, large hail, heavy rainfall and wind gusts that will go towards the southern central parts and inland," she said.

"Darling Downs, the South Burnett region, the Western Wide Downs will experience some of that severe weather."

BOM predicted that Sunday would follow suit with a cloudy day, but with a 60 per cent chance of showers, most likely in the early morning, with winds south-easterly 25 to 35km/h tending southerly 15 to 20 km/h in the late evening.

Ms Berry said the weather could be fine earlier in the week but storms could return on Thursday.

"We could see some thunderstorms but it's difficult to know because it's so far away," she said.

"There will be patchy rain and an odd thunderstorm to come but it is still a little uncertain as to when it will happen next week."
