On Tuesday RACQ revealed the data, which showed about five rescues of children or animals from hot cars were made every day.

Of the 1042 calls made, 611 were for a child locked in a car and the remaining 431 were to rescue a pet.

June had the highest number of calls with 183 while September had the lowest with 167.

The latest data showed October had 170 calls, of which 100 were about children locked in vehicles.

RACQ spokeswoman Kirsty Clinton said it was particularly important for people to be vigilant in the summer months as temperates inside vehicles could rise quickly.

"Most of these are accidental lock-ins and happen when mum or dad give the child the keys
to play with, and they accidentally press the lock button," she said.

“When your child’s in the car, keep the keys on you at all times, and in these warm months,
consider putting a window all the way down before you shut the door, just in case!”

Ms Clinton warned children were at risk of death or serious injury if they were left in cars.

“There’s no safe time to leave a child unattended in a car," she said.

In Queensland temperatures inside a car can rise by 10 degrees in eight minutes – even if the car is in the shade or has a window left open.
