The wild tawny frogmouth was found tangled in a barbed wire fence in south-east Queensland and taken to Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service in Greenslopes, with several key wing feathers broken beyond repair.

With months of stressful rehabilitation ahead if the bird was kept waiting for the broken feathers to moult out and regrow, the clinic instead used feathers from another tawny frogmouth to repair the bird's wing.

Carefully cutting away the damaged feathers, the new feathers were implanted into the bird's wing under sedation.

Sharing photos and details of the complex procedure on Facebook, the clinic showed how tiny metal rods and glue were used to strengthen the new wing feathers.

"The tawny recovered well from its procedure and went into care for a couple of days to assess its ability to fly," the clinic said on Facebook.

"It was soon released back into the wild and we hope he doesn't get himself stuck in any more tricky situations."
