The Bureau of Meteorology's August summary reported that Daintree Village, Port Douglas and the Whyanbeel Valley received between 0.4 millimetres to 4 millimetres of rain across the month, far below their double-figure averages.

Bingil Bay, three hours north of Townsville, recorded just 0.2 millimetres, its driest August since 1927.

The lack of rainfall was compounded by some of Queensland's warmest-ever August temperatures, with Mackay and Coconut Island in the Torres Strait posting temperatures of 30 and 34 degrees.

Mackay's average August temperature is 22.

While the north coast recorded its driest month, there was still rainfall in the far north.

As daytime temperatures tracked high, overnight temperatures dropped, with Stanthorpe shivering through -7.4 degrees on August 21, with an average 0.1 degrees overnight throughout the month.

Some respite from the dry weather was brought to south-east Queensland in late August with moderate rain across the state. The most rainfall was recorded at Warrie Station, near St George,  close to the NSW border.

The dry conditions sparked warnings from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services that the fire season would be a long and hazardous, with high fuel load on the ground and low soil moisture.

But while August was relatively rain-free, September has arrived in Brisbane with a week of wet weather ahead.

Rainfall of between two and 10 millimetres was predicted for Monday, up to 15 millimetres on Tuesday, and showery days for the rest of the week.

Thunderstorms were also predicted in the afternoons throughout the week, clearing on Sunday with a high of 24.

The rains were forecast to come with a few windy afternoons.
