The highest rainfall was 83mm, recorded in Tamborine Mountain, inland from the Gold Coast, and golf ball-sized hailstones fell in Aspley, in Brisbane's north, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

BoM meteorologist Livio Regano said 106km/h wind gusts were recorded in Toowoomba and 90km/h winds were recorded in the Brisbane and Lockyer Valley regions.

Mr Regano said minor flash flooding and uprooted trees were also reported in Toowoomba.

Other significant rainfall totals included 69mm in Logan, 66mm in the Ipswich suburb of Bundamba, 60mm in Mount Glorious and Brisbane City recorded 10mm.

An Energex spokeswoman said 15,000 properties lost power at the height of the storms, with Brisbane's northside, Brendale and Caboolture in Moreton Bay and the Lockyer Valley the worst hit.

The outages had been fixed by Monday morning, with Energex also estimating 10,000 lightning strikes hit the ground across south-east Queensland on Sunday.

Mr Regano said the wild weather originated in the Darling Downs when the "atmosphere overturned" and the storms moved over Brisbane by mid-afternoon.

He said warm air close to the ground and cool air above caused unstable conditions. The warm air was drawn up into the atmosphere and created a big line of storms.

Looking ahead, the lingering chance of showers and possible thunderstorms was forecast to remain for Brisbane throughout the week.

Top temperatures were expected to hit 30 degrees on Wednesday and Sunday and stay between 27 and 29 in between. Overnight lows were expected to range between 17 and 19 degrees.
