Police said a man was riding along a street at Mooloolaba early on Sunday morning when he hit a garden hose that was hung at chest height and tied across the road.

The cyclist, 56, was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with a broken collarbone and fractured ribs.

Mr Bailey described it as a "pre-meditated act" designed to cause injury and trauma.

"I condemn it in the strongest possible terms," he said.

"The road toll and crash hospitalisations are difficult enough to eliminate without deliberate acts to cause road crashes," he said.

"I send my warmest wishes to the cyclist injured and hope sincerely our police investigators find the perpetrators and take appropriate action against them."

A police spokeswoman said no one had been arrested or charged overnight in regards to the incident.

The perpetrators also tore down scaffolding, signs and flags and threw them across the road, she said, creating a mess.

Investigators have asked residents who saw suspicious activity in the area to come forward.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said the 56-year-old rider could have been killed.

"The person who set this trap is a coward and a criminal," she said.

"My thoughts are with the cyclist and his family as he recovers from this shocking trap."

Ms Savage said the incident was a grave violation of community standards.

"All Queenslanders should be able to walk and ride our suburbs without being afraid of death traps," she said.

"Shame on the person or people who set this trap."
