The man in his 30s was believed to have had measles while travelling overseas and was infectious from December 16 to 25.

He visited places including Felons Brewing Co at Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane on December 16, Oxford Street Bulimba on December 19 and Eatons Hill Shopping Centre from 4pm to 5.30pm on December 20.

He also visited The Prince Charles Hospital Emergency Department from 7.30pm to midnight on December 19 and again from 5pm to 9pm on December 21.

Metro North Hospital and Health Service is warning people who were in those areas at the same time as the man to be wary of measles symptoms.

"Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and is spread by tiny droplets
generated through coughing and sneezing," a spokeswoman said.

"Measles symptoms usually start around 10 days after contact, but can occur between seven and 18 days after contact with an infectious person."

The spokeswoman said the initial symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes before experiencing a blotchy, red rash a few days later.

"The rash often starts on the face and neck, then becomes widespread over the body," she said.

The spokeswoman urged anyone who may have developed symptoms to measles within the next week or fortnight to stay home and contact their general practitioner for advice.

"When seeking treatment, it is important to call the medical practice first to say you could have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading the disease to others," she said.

The spokeswoman said two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine was a high level protection against measles.

"The MMR vaccine is funded and anyone requiring vaccination should arrange this through their GP," she said.
