A charity golf game was hosted by police to raise funds for the 24-year-old officer, who was struck down while laying road spikes in Booval on September 28.

He suffered broken bones and serious head injuries and was rushed to the intensive care unit, where he remained for weeks in a coma.

“It is as good as it can be I suppose, I take it a day at a time,” Constable McAulay said.

“The injuries were pretty severe, but I just tackle one little goal at a time and try and do my best.”

Constable McAulay was discharged from hospital in late November, but still has a long road to recovery.

“I still need a couple of surgeries, I need to get my scalp put back in obviously and a few more ligaments in my knee,” Constable McAulay said.

“I am going to physio and have appointments at the hospital so we will take it one step at a time and we will get through it.

“Just to see everyone gathered here today in support of me and just to bring the community together is amazing. It is a pretty surreal experience to be honest.”

Almost 150 golfers tee-offed at the Sandy Gallop Golf Club on Friday morning.

Assistant police commissioner Mike Condon said the event was a powerful show of support by the public, police and emergency services for a valued member of the community.

“It is a typical day where police come together, work together with the public to enjoy each others company, but also to raise some very important funds as Peter works through the day-to-day recovery period,” Mr Condon said.

“The way everyone has rallied around Constable McAulay and his family in this time of need is truly inspiring.”

Mr Condon said he hoped Constable McAulay could one day return to full duties on the police force.
