A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the plane crashed at a location off the Captain Cook Highway in Craiglie at 5.20pm on Thursday.

The spokesman said paramedics were at the scene and the rescue helicopter was called in.

Police later confirmed the 66-year-old pilot and sole occupant had died at the scene.

The forensic crash unit is investigating, with help from Recreational Aviation Australia and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
