The 29-year-old from Ipswich was with a group of people, who were all known to him, in the unit at Booval when the incident occurred.
Emergency services were called at 9am on Saturday on Bergin Street when they found the man with the stomach wound.
He was rushed to Ipswich Base Hospital with life-threatening injuries but died while he underwent surgery a short time later.
A crime scene has been declared, with scientific and scenes of crime officers processing the scenes and uniform and detectives canvassing the areas.
A 45-year-old man from Moores Park in Ipswich was charged with murder on Saturday evening and is scheduled to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday.
Detective Inspector David Briese said detectives were working through to determine the cause of the incident.
"There were a number of witnesses at the location at the time and detectives are speaking with them," he said.
"We hope to put the pieces of the puzzle together by this afternoon."
Inspector Briese said police had set up a command centre and had local detectives and homicide detectives working on the case.
"I would imagine (the unit) would remain a crime scene and guarded by police at least for the next 12 to 24 hours while our scientific officers conduct their examinations."
Inspector Briese said there were two to four people at the unit during the incident.
"It appears that everyone in that unit were known to each other," he said.
