Commuters were stunned to come across hundreds of dollars of coins strewn across the intersection of Stanley Street East and Cavendish Road on Tuesday afternoon, near Coorparoo Secondary College.

About 2pm, police were called to Coorparoo after reports something had fallen from the back of a cash transport truck.

When officers arrived, they found about three boxes of coins had somehow managed to fall off the truck and onto the road.

A witness reported seeing coins scattered over two lanes of traffic causing some delays, while police and armoured guard officers used brooms and shovels to sweep up the cash.

Others were on their hands and knees, scraping up coins, with the incident taking more than an hour to clean-up.

A police spokesman said several Good Samaritans stepped in to help rather than take advantage of the situation.

"Multiple members of the public stopped to help pick them up," he said.

"The people who were helping were putting it back into the containers, some sort of bins."

Prosegur, which offers cash-in-transit services, was contacted for comment.

It is not the first time a truck losing its load in Brisbane has caused a flutter.

In 2015, a beer truck lost its cargo in Rocklea, prompting inevitable references to The Simpsons, with no shortage of people willing to help clean it up.
