The furore came after a campaign against the Innisfail business erupted on social media, with The Red Heart Campaign calling for people to boycott the business, writing "there is nothing funny about domestic violence or violence against women".

State politicians on Wednesday denounced the controversial name of the shop, which has the motto "The only battering anyone need know".

But The Battered Wife owner Carolyn Kerr, a former police officer who had seen many examples of domestic violence before becoming a victim herself, said on Facebook the issue was not a joke.

"I've sat on many sides of that fence but y'all presume I'm endorsing it with the name because someone posted something," she wrote.

"I had to close my business tonight for the safety of my junior team member and the relentless prank calls/yukky messages and all of the terrible reviews."

Ms Kerr told Seven News overnight she understood the controversy the name would create when she chose it but claimed it would bring awareness to the "very real problem" in society.

"There's no way that I took it in light that I was promoting domestic violence like all these keyboard warriors they're carrying on about," she said.

"Just because I name my shop The Battered Wife, doesn't mean I'm advocating violence, and then when they're turning around and becoming threatening and becoming abusive, they're becoming the people they condemn."

Ms Kerr told Today on Thursday morning she would not change the name.

"This is my little way of digging in my heels and saying enough is enough," she said.

"It’s heartbreaking to see that these beautiful people [victims] are going through and looking for and needing support ... that’s got to change and if this is what it takes to make a stand, make a difference and be heard, then so be it."

Business was so good at the fish and chip shop, Ms Kerr said, they were looking to hire another staff member.

"It [the community] has been very very supportive and I’ve got a lot of people coming here who have been in the same situation and enjoyed it and are very supportive of the name and agree with the reasons why I did it."

Queensland MPs put politics aside on Wednesday and gathered together outside the Parliament at a Red Rose rally to remember women who lost their lives to violence, including Toyah Cordingley.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said the business name was "appalling".

"That business is completely out of step with what the community's expectations are," she said.

"We're talking about respect, we're talking about changing culture, there's nothing funny about a statement like that.

"I'm pretty sure the community and their customers will make their own mind up about what they think of that name."

LNP leader Deb Frecklington said the name was "totally inappropriate".

"I stood side by side with the Premier [Annastacia Palaszczuk] today in relation to saying no to any form of domestic or sexual violence against families, against children," she said.

Greens MP Michael Berkman was similarly unimpressed with The Battered Wife.

"That's really poor taste, frankly," he said.

"A terrible supposed gag like that just reinforces all of the cultural acceptance of domestic violence.

"We need to see the opposite from everyone at all levels, from a fish-and-chip shop right through to members of Parliament."
