A person is dead after their car hit a tree and caught on fire on the Gold Coast early Sunday morning.

Police said they believed the car was travelling on Castle Hill Drive when it left the road, crashed into a tree and caught alight about 2.15am.

The driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene.
Police are yet to determine the gender or age of the driver.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
Any witnesses should contact police.
